Last session we studied the importance of being theologically sound. In this final session, we’re going a step further and talk about how growing disciples are increasingly motivated by a missional heart.
When we think of Christian maturity, we often hear about spiritual practices like Bible reading, prayer, and giving, but we don’t often hear about someone who has a heart for the lost. In this session, Dean Inserra teaches us how we are never more like Jesus than when we are seeking our lost friends, so having a missional heart is an essential mark of a growing disciple.

Jesus didn’t come to be a great teacher, and He didn’t come to be a great healer, though He was both of those things. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. The simple, straightforward, unadorned mission of Jesus was to save lost sinners. For us to be growing disciples, Jesus’ mission has to become our mission. However, we have often settled for less.
Having a missional heart is an essential marker of a growing disciple. Our concern cannot simply be for our own spiritual health and our own growth. The most basic definition of a disciple is “a learner.” To be an effective disciple, we should increasingly become more like our teacher. Our teacher cares deeply for the lost. He loves them so much that He came to earth to save them. He has done it for you and longs to do it for others as well.

The gospel message is that God is a Holy God and we have rebelled against Him. He made us to be in a relationship with Him. But we have all said, “God, no thanks. I don’t want you. I want your stuff instead. I don’t want your way. I want my way.” God being a holy God can’t let sin go unpunished. So Jesus came to take the punishment for our sins—to seek and to save those who are lost through His death on the cross. Through the cross, three things happened. One, the people of God would be saved, the justice of God would be satisfied, and the love of God would be revealed. We are never more like Jesus than when we are taking this message to our lost friends.
